Domain Education 101

Domain education 101

Hey Domainer’s,

We all know how important it is to understand a market before we begin investing.  Today I wanted to provide you with some resources that will help you tremendously so that you can make an informed decision before you buy or sell domain names.  These resources have helped us at QLQ make some great deals for our customers and if you use them right, they will benefit you as well.

Comparables – Many people look at domain names as virtual real estate.  Just like when you buy a property, when it comes to domains it’s all about location, location, location.  To understand what your “location” is worth, it is important to look at what similar names have sold for.  You wouldn’t blindly put a bid down on a new home without checking what the other homes in the area have sold for, would you?  Here are a few important websites to check to see if you are buying or selling a domain asset for market price.  It is important to check all of these sites as you get different insights from each one. – Namebio captures sales from all of the major aftermarket sites (the ones that share their sales publically anyway) as well as some minor aftermarket sites and brokerages.  QLQ is a listed venue on Namebio and it is the only place that you can got to see our public sales. – Shortnames seems to capture more sales than name bio but doesn’t have partnerships with as many small firms as Namebio.  They also list current open auctions so you can see recent sales as well as current bids giving you more real time data. – This is the site to go to if you want to understand current pricing and recent sales coming from the Chinese market.  The interface can be a bit challenging to use but once you figure it out you will get a lot of great info. – We keep a general price list for the highly sought after domain segments on our homepage.  Whenever new sales happen, we adjust our figures to give you a general idea about the price range that you should expect to either buy or sell a name in a specific category.

News – It is important to understand what names are being sold and for how much but it is also just as important to keep up with industry news and trends.  Being a person on the go, I prefer to listen to podcasts mostly but there are some important sites and newsletters to subscribe to in order to broaden your knowledge base. – This is a great site not only for articles but they have a podcast as well.  This is my go to source for information about the domain industry.  They have interviews will top domainers and dive into different aspects of the marketplace.  I always leave with new ideas after a visit to this site. – This is probably the premiere site for industry news, they bill themselves as the Domain Industry News Magazine.  A great place to learn about market trends and what the big players are doing.  Definitely a must bookmark for an savvy domain investor. – If you like to consume your media by video than this is the place for you.  Domainsherpa has the best interviews in the industry and you can actually see the faces of some of the names that you have heard about. – Signing up for the daily newsletter is a must for all Domainers.  Each day you will receive an email with the top auctions of the day and you will get some quirky yet funny comments to go with it.  I love to start each day reading this newsletter. – Sign up for the QLQ newsletter.  About twice a month you will receive a list of well priced domain names as well as new articles that will give you additional market insights.

This is a pretty good start if you are new to the domain game or if you just want to expand your knowledge base.  We would love to hear your feedback about this article at  Have a great day and go make some money!
